Subject: Termination of Support for Skype for TV
Skype has announced that they will terminate support for Skype for TV from June 2016. Based on this announcement, Sony will no longer be able to support the Skype app on Sony BRAVIA television sets. Based on Skype's announcement, the Skype app may continue to function on Sony TVs with some limitations for a time; however, based on Skype's plan to no longer support Skype for TV, we anticipate that Skype will no longer function on TVs in the future. Q1.) We saw the announcement of “Skype for TV service termination” on the Skype support web page. Are Sony TVs affected by this announcement? A1.) Yes, Sony TVs which have the Skype app are affected. Q2.) Which models are included in this scope? A2.) Please refer to model list below. Q3.) What impact does this have on the TV? A3.) FY11/12 models: Skype may continue to function on Sony TVs with some limitations for a period of time, but based on Skype’s plan to no longer support Skypefor TV, we anticipate that Skype will no longer function on TVs in the future. Initially, the ability to create a Skype name, sign in to Skype for TV with a newly created Skype account, and the ability to change a Skype password will not function. However, if you wish to change your password, you can on Skype.com. After FY13 models: Skype may continue to function using either your Skype Name or Microsoft Account, but we anticipate that in the future it will no longer function based on Skype’s plan to no longer support Skype for TV. Q4.) Why can’t I create a Skype name on my Sony TV? (FY11/12 model once the termination is completed in June) A4.) Skype is no longer supporting Skype on the TV. The app will continue to work for a period of time, but with some limitations. Initially, the ability to create a Skype name, sign in to Skype for TV with a newly created Skype account and the ability to change a Skype password will not function. However, if you wish to change your password, you can on Skype.com. Q5.) Can I sign in to Skype on TV using a newly created Microsoft Account that was created on my computer / mobile device? (FY11/12 model and after support termination by Microsoft (June/2016)) A5.) Skype is no longer supporting Skype on the TV. The app will continue to work for a period of time, but with some limitations. Initially, the ability to create a Skype name, sign in to Skype for TV with a newly created Skype account and the ability to change a Skype password will not function. Why can’t create a Skype name and can’t change our Skype password. Will this change in the future? (FY11/12 model) (after support termination by Microsoft (June/2016)) A6.) When will Sony improve this issue? A8.) As Skype no longer support their Skype on TV app, Sony cannot improve the situation for owners. Q9.) Will I be able to use Skype if I update the TV's software? A9.) The Skype on TV app is no longer supported by Skype. Updating to the latest software will not improve the issue. Q10.) When Sony sold this product, Sony informed customers that they can use Skype. Is this Sony’s mistake? A10.) We apologise that support for the Skype app will end. However, this is because Skype no longer supports their Skype on TV app. The app will continue to work for a period of time, but with some limitations. However, if you wish to change your password, you can on Skype.com. Q11.) I bought my TV because it supports Skype. Please replace my product with a different one supporting Skype, or refund my payment since I want to return it to Sony. A11.) Unfortunately, we apologise that we are unable to do so as the issue is not due to any fault in our TVs. Q12.) Will Sony inform customers about this issue on their website? A12.)
